On 28th December, 1916, the 20th London battalion of 141 Brigade, 47th Division moved into the front line of the Bluff sector of the Ypres salient. The enemy welcomed in the new year on 1st January, 1917 with a very heavy artillery and trench mortar barrage of their positions but did not follow it up with any infantry attack. Towards evening the firing eased off but not before Charles Broad had been killed. |
